The short answer
Often yes, though not in every condition. Lead is a soft metal that can be shaped in cold weather, so the metal itself is rarely the limit. The limits are safety on a wet or icy roof, damp timber under the lead and pointing that needs dry conditions to set. A temporary cover goes on a leaking roof first, and the lasting repair follows when the weather allows.
What the weather changes
Lead is not fussy about temperature. It can be cut, folded and dressed in the cold, and it does not need warmth to be worked. What cold and wet change is everything around it.
The first is safety. A roof glazed with rain, frost or ice is a dangerous place to stand, and ladders and scaffold boards are slippery too. No repair is worth a fall, and a roofer who judges that it is unsafe to go up is making the right call.
The second is dampness. Lead laid over wet boards or a wet wall traps the moisture beneath it. The timber stays damp, rot can set in and the new work is shut over a problem. Surfaces should be dry enough to work on and to be left alone.
The third is pointing. Mortar around a flashing needs time to set, and rain or a hard frost before it has done so can spoil it. When the weather is wrong, it is the pointing that gets put back.
Wind is a fourth: lifting a large sheet of lead in a strong gust is hard to control, even when the temperature is fine.
Temporary measures first
When lead is leaking now, the question is not whether the perfect repair can be done today. It is how to stop water coming in until the repair can be done properly, so a make-safe visit comes first.
A temporary measure might be a sheet fixed over the failing flashing, a patch over a split or a covering over a lifted edge. It is meant to hold for a short time, and it is not the repair itself.
While it is in place, protect the inside. Move furniture, put a bowl under a drip and photograph the stain, as the date and the weather help us trace the cause. Where electrics are close to the leak, keep clear and isolate the circuit only when that is safe.
If an insurance claim is likely, the usual route is to notify the insurer, have a temporary repair made and keep photographs and receipts. We make no promise about a claim, which turns on your policy's own wording. Our page on signs of a leaking flashing shows what to look for while you wait.
The local picture
Met Office averages for South Farnborough (1991 to 2020) show annual rain of about 715 mm over 118 wet days, with around 53 air-frost days. That is a reminder that there are many days when rain is falling, and a good number of cold mornings, so any roofer here works with the weather as a matter of course.
It does not mean repairs must wait for summer. Dry spells come through the year, and a repair can be booked into one. A short dry window may be enough for a small flashing job.
Frost matters in another way: lead expands and contracts with temperature, and a flashing fixed too rigidly can split under repeated cold snaps. A repair that frees the lead to move helps for years afterwards. Our page on why lead splits explains this.
So the practical answer is to act on a leak early, whatever the season, and let the roofer choose the day for the lasting work, because a small flashing fault left through a wet winter tends to cost more to put right in the spring.
The lead roofing hub covers the full range of leadwork we undertake for Farnborough, Camberley and Fleet homes.
How we decide on the day
We look at the forecast, and at the roof itself. If the lead is split but dry, and the boards are sound, a repair in cool dry weather is straightforward. If the boards are soaked, we dry the area before closing it, or make it safe and return.
The survey photographs show the state of the lead, the boards and the wall, and you see them. You are told what can be done now, what needs a dry day and why. Where cover for the opening is the sensible first move, that is what we propose, and the permanent repair is booked for later.
Nothing is rushed in poor conditions to save a second visit. A repair fixed to damp timber, or pointed in the rain, often has to be done twice.
One total price in writing covers the work we recommend, including the return visit if there is one.
If you have a leak and are unsure how urgent it is, send us photographs through the enquiry form or the WhatsApp line. Our page on lead flashing repair covers what the lasting fix involves.
