The short answer
Four things drive the price: how much gutter is affected, how hard the roofline is to reach, what the gutter is made of and what condition the fascia behind it is in. National guides give context: Which? puts emptying the gutters at £75 to £350 ex VAT, and MyJobQuote lists replacement at around £1,000 to £1,600. A repair falls somewhere between, and follows a survey.
Length, damage and material
The first driver is how much of the gutter is involved. A single leaking joint is a small job: a new seal, a union or a short length. A run that has sagged along its whole length, or a gutter that is cracked in several places, needs more time and more parts.
The nature of the fault counts. Cleaning and resealing are cheap. Re-fixing sagging brackets or adding new ones takes more labour. Replacing sections or fittings means materials as well, and a corner, stop end or outlet is a small part that can matter a lot to the fit.
Material changes the work. uPVC parts are cheap and standard, and a section or union can be swapped quickly. Aluminium parts cost more and may need a matching profile. Cast iron is heavy and needs strong fixings, and repair can involve specialist care. A continuous aluminium run is formed in one piece, so damage means cutting and replacing a whole length.
The board behind the gutter can matter most of all. If the board is rotten, new brackets have nothing solid to grip, and the real repair is to the fascia, which changes the scale of the job. Our page on rotten fascia boards explains how that is judged.
A roofer can tell from the ground that a joint is dripping, but not what the board behind is like, so the price is firm only after a close look.
Access and the working day
Reaching the gutter often costs more than mending it. A low gutter on a bungalow can be done from a ladder in a short time. A gutter over a porch, an extension roof or a steep drop may need a tower. A three-storey house, or a run that spans a long front, usually calls for scaffold.
Scaffold over the road or pavement has to be licensed, and councils want notice. Hampshire County Council charges £211.90 for the first 2 weeks and £72 for each further 2-week period, with a notice period of ten clear working days. A frame inside your own boundary is licence-free.
On a small repair the cost of scaffold can outweigh the gutter work, which is why it pays to combine jobs. If fascias, soffits, a chimney or the roof edge also need attention, doing them in one visit shares the access cost.
Other factors include the distance, parking, the need to carry parts through the house, whether the ground is firm for a tower and how long the job takes. A job that needs two people for an afternoon costs more than one that takes an hour.
Our page on whether roof repairs need scaffolding explains how access is chosen.
National ranges for context
Published figures give scale and are typical UK costs, not quotes. Which? (Nov 2025) puts emptying the gutters, front and back, at £75 to £350, ex VAT. That is the smallest gutter job.
MyJobQuote lists gutter replacement at around £1,000 to £1,600, and capping fascias and soffits at about £800 on a three-bedroom semi (MyJobQuote, Oct and Sep 2026). Replacing a concrete gutter averages £2,400 on an older MyJobQuote page dated January 2026.
Those figures cover whole systems or clearing, so a repair of one joint or one section falls well below the replacement range, while a repair that involves a fascia and several sections approaches it. Where the cost of repair nears the cost of a new gutter, replacement is often the better buy, since the old run is likely to fail elsewhere.
Life matters here. A well-fitted gutter can last for decades, so replacing an old one that is failing in many places is not wasteful. For fascias, a retailer quotes 20 to 40 years for uPVC, though a seller has its own interest in that number.
VAT can add to the bill, so check whether a quote includes it.
How we price a repair
We look at the whole gutter, not only the drip. That means the joints, brackets, falls, outlets, downpipes and the fascia behind, with photographs of each fault and a note of the length affected.
The price follows from parts, time, access and any fascia work, set out as one written total with VAT and scaffold stated. We do not price a repair over the phone, because a joint that looks small may sit on rotten timber.
We tell you where a small repair will do the job and where it would only postpone a larger one. If the sensible course is a section of new gutter, we tell you, and if a full run needs replacing, the evidence shows why.
Citizens Advice recommends getting at least 3 written quotes, and a clear survey makes them easy to compare. Ask each firm what it has assumed about access and the fascia.
The gutters, soffits and fascias hub covers the full roofline. For choosing materials, aluminium against uPVC guttering compares them, and fixing a small leak early usually keeps the bill down.
